Hello friends, first of all a very Happy New Year 2019 to all of you from me and my Kitchen. I Hope you all had a very good time spent with your family and friends and of course with lots of food.
My first post for 2019 is a very interesting and spicy dish made with Appe. Click appe or gunta ponganalu recipe. I would say left over appe because I made this yummy dish with lots of left over appe from today's breakfast. We usually have very lite and simple menu for dinner like roti - sabzi or pasta or some times just bread and omelette. Today as I was thinking what to cook for dinner, I see there are no veggies in my refrigerator, but I see lots of left over appe. Wanted to make something out of them rather than feeding the kids same old appe (To be frank even I was bored of eating them )
So thought why not add some masala / chutney powder and fry the appe with some onion and tomato gravy. You can even add chopped bell pepper along with onion and tomato.To my luck I had 1 onion and 1/2 tomato in my refrigerator. Add 1 spoon of lime or lemon juice to the dish at the end. I forgot to add to my dish but later realized lime juice might have given the dish nice flavor and taste. This dish will be perfect for breakfast, lite lunch or dinner, lunch box or after school snack. So why wait, lets get started with the list of ingredients and procedure.
This recipe goes to the week 2, Day 1 of Blogging Marathon 96 under the theme " Easy Dinner Recipes”.
Ingredients:
Appe 10 ( Fresh or left over )
Sambar powder 1 table spoon
Ghee / Butter 2 table spoons
Chopped onions 1/2 cup
Chopped tomato 1/2 cup
Chopped or slit green chilies 3
Chopped cilantro 1/4 cup
Salt to taste
Turmeric 1/4 teaspoon
Chili powder 1/2 teaspoon
Grated carrot 1 spoon ( for garnishing )
Lime or Lemon juice 1 spoon ( optional )
Preparation
In a non stick large skillet add butter / ghee.
Once the butter is warm enough, add the sambar powder.
Mix well in butter, now add appe into the skillet and coat them nicely with masala powder.
Let the appe fry on medium to low flame for 4-5 minutes.
Now move the appe to one side, and add chopped onion, tomato and green chili.
Also add turmeric, chili powder and salt if required because your prepared appe might have some salt in it.
Cook till the tomatoes become nice and soft.
Now mix the appe with the onion masala and cook further for another 5-7 minutes.
Add Lime or lemon juice if you like at this time and switch of the flame.
Transfer the masala appe to a serving plate and garnish with grated carrot and chopped cilantro.
Serve hot.

That is definitely a wonderful way of uplifting appe. Your fridge sounds a lot similar to mine right now :D. Have to go for grocery shopping tomorrow. The recipe sounds similar to chilli idli but with its own twists. I used to fry idlis in milagai podi before preparing an onion and capsicum sauce to go with it.
Ha ha ! I would literally die if my frig would be in that state ! But kudos to you for taking the challenge and serving an interesting and delicious dinner with these appes . They sound fantastic .
This is an interesting way of serving appe's. so yummy and with all that masala's I would definitely lick the bowl lol...
That's a nice makeover for the left over appe. It looks yumm and kids must have enjoyed a new variety of snack.
Like Vaishali , I live my fridge to be always full and can’t cook a meal if I don’t have the ingredients. This dish is a great makeaover with leftover appes

I never knew we could eat appe like this, that's an interesting and super delicious way to serve appes.
This reminds me of the masala idli we make with leftover idlis. This looks super spicy and absolutely delicious.
Reading the title I was expecting masala spiced gunta ponganalu. But this is even better!! Presenting good old leftover gunta ponganalu in a new avatar.
This is a fun way to serve the traditional appe. Very innovative and this will be great for lunch boxes.
