Spicy Phool Makhana ( Fox Nuts )

Phool Makhana or Makhana are also known as Fox Nuts. These are nothing but the lotus seeds. These seeds are often used in Indian sweets and savories like Kheer, Raita or Makhana curry. They are slightly roasted in ghee along with some spices and served as evening sanck with tea or coffee. In few regions people also use these seeds as an offering to the gods, specially during Navratri.

Fox nuts are great snack for diabetics and heart patients as they contain the good fat and have low quantity of saturated fats. They also make a good weigh loss food too. Fox nuts are rich in fiber, antioxidants, calcium and iron. Today I made a yummy, crunchy and spicy snack with these popped lotus seeds-fox nuts. This recipe goes to day 14 of  Mega Marathon theme " Sweets and Snacks".

Ingredients:

Phool Makhana / Fox nuts  2 cups
Salt to taste
Chili powder 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala 1/2 tsp
Roasted cumin powder 1/2 tsp
Ghee 1 tbsp

Preparation:

Dry roast fox nuts on medium heat for about 10 minutes.
When you try to bite the nuts it will be crispy and crunchy, that is when it is done.
Remove and set aside.
In a the same pan heat ghee or oil.
Add chili powder, cumin powder, garam masala and salt to taste.

Mix everything well in ghee, now add roasted makhana.
Mix thoroughly so that all the spices are very well coasted to the nuts.
Saute for a minute or two and remove to cool down.
Serve or store in air tight container.

Below are the sweets I have posted so far in this Mega Marathon.
